Collagen for Skin

Collagen has been a hot topic in the media this year, and for good reason!  About 80% of our skin consists of collagen. After the age of 20, we estimate that collagen production decreases by 1% each year. As a result, maintaining collagen is an important key to maintaining skin youthfulness.

Collagen is the most common and abundant form of protein in the body. It is found in many tissues of the muscles, bones, tendons, blood vessels and the digestive system. However, when people discuss collagen, they are typically referring to its benefits for the skin.

How can we maintain collagen production? It is all about harvesting the body’s natural healing powers and tricking the body to produce more collagen. The cells in our skin that produce collagen are called fibroblasts.  They are normally in a dormant state.  When activated, the cells ‘turn on’ and begin the process of new collagen production.

Several treatments can kickstart the fibroblasts to produce more collagen to plump the skin.

At Kingsway Dermatology, our professional cosmetic and medical dermatologists offer collagen for skin treatments to make you look at great as you feel. For more information on collagen treatments, call us at 416 231 0103 today.

Microneedling and Collagen Induction Therapy

Micro-needling is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of various skin conditions such as light scarring from acne, enlarged or dilated pores, stretch marks and overall rejuvenation of the skin. The procedure itself is done with a micro-needling device that glides over the top of the skin creating hundreds of tiny microchannels. By creating this controlled injury to the skin we trigger the body’s natural healing response which results in the stimulation of new collagen and elastin fibres. We can help boost your collagen production with this technique by applying a layer of your own growth factors harvested from your own blood platelets.

Our Kingsway Signature Regenerating Collagen Booster harnesses the power of microneedling injecting into the middle layer of the dermis (the mesoderm) a non-cross linked hyaluronic acid along with a layer of your own growth factors using your own blood platelets – Platelet Rich Plasma. Then your dermatologists will manually inject a small reserve of the plasma around the eye area or neck area depending on your needs. This is a 4 in 1 treatment that helps to tone, tighten and induce new collagen.

Platelet Rich Plasma is another collagen-boosting treatment that uses your own growth factors harvested from your own blood platelets. We take a sample of blood and spin in a centrifuge which will concentrate the platelets. This concentration is then applied to your skin either by manual dermatologist administered injections, by layering after microneedling or with our Signature Regenerating Collagen Booster.

How the Collagen Induction Therapy is Performed

Collagen treatment (collagen induction therapy) begins with an application of topical numbing cream to the area that is being treated. This remains on the skin for 30 to 40 minutes, after which time the skin will be cleansed and prepared for the procedure. Collagen treatment will typically last 45 minutes.

During the procedure, you may feel some pressure points but it should not be overtly painful – minor discomfort that is tolerable. Once the needling is complete you may feel a tight warm, itchy sensation, which is normal. The last step is a soothing, cold collagen mask that is applied to the area and left on for about 10 minutes and then removed. Your technician will apply a regenerating cream, SPF and go over the post-care procedures with you.

Post Collagen Treatment Considerations

Following the procedure, you will experience some facial redness, and tightness similar to what sunburn would feel like. For the first 24 hours, it would be best to avoid strenuous workouts, hot tubs and swimming in a chlorinated pool. For the following 3 to 4 days cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser and then apply the cream which will be given to you.

You may also experience some minor flaking or drying of the skin, simply apply the cream as needed. It would also best not to apply any medicated skincare products such as retinol for 7 days after the procedure. Refrain from other treatments pre and post for 1-2 weeks. Be sure to check with us if you have any scheduled appointments elsewhere for safety. Although healing times may vary, most people enjoy the beautiful glow to their skin by day 7 after the treatment.
